Fairbanks - The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Athletics announced today that UAF defenseman Dwayne Zinger (Coronation, Alberta) has signed a professional contract with the National Hockey League's Detroit Red Wings. Under an agreement with the Red Wings specific contract terms are not available.
Zinger becomes the sixth Nanook player to sign a professional contract following Steve Moria (New York Rangers, 1984), Shawn Chambers (Minnesota North Stars, 1987), Keith Street (Vancouver Canucks, 1988), Wade Klippenstein (Quebec Nordiques, 1990) and Corey Spring (Tampa Bay Lightning, 1995).
"I am very happy for Dwayne," said UAF head coach Guy Gadowsky. "He is very deserving of this moment as he exhibits the the highest levels of work ethic and commitment. It is always great to see great things happen to great people."
The 6-4, 225 lb. blueliner leaves this evening for Detroit, where he will attend Tuesday night's Red Wings game against the Nashville Predators, following which he will depart for Cincinnati where he will report to the Cincinnati Mighty Duck's camp. The Mighty Ducks are member of the American Hockey League (AHL) and are a shared farm team between the Red Wings and the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
