(Fairbanks) The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Athletics announces that former Nanook hockey player Tavis MacMillan has been named as the new assistant hockey coach at UAF. He replaces three-year assistant coach Jordy Wolter, whose contract was not renewed following last season.
A native of Eastend, Saskatchewan, MacMillan was a four-year honor roll student at Bert Church High School and a 1994 graduate of UAF with a degree in Business Management. MacMillan is UAF's fourth all-time leading scorer with 192 career points. He tied teammate Dean Fedorchuk for the NCAA Division I scoring crown (74 points) during the 1993-94 season.
MacMillan attended the Kalamazoo Wings camp in the IHL, then played for the Greensboro Monarchs in the ECHL and the Alaska Gold Kings in the newly formed West Coast Hockey League during the 1995-96 season. He was the player/assistant general manager for the Gold Kings last season where he helped with player recruitment and management, marketing, promotions and the overall day-to-day operations.
Coach Dave Laurion commented, "I'm extremely happy that our program has a former standout player and UAF graduate on our coaching staff. He will be able to present an accurate and honest insight to prospective recruits."
MacMillan's response to the announcement was, "Relief and excitement. This is a challenge and opportunity I am looking forward to, which hopefully will lead to me staying in college hockey for some time to come. My wife and I are fond of the community of Fairbanks and this is an opportunity to maintain and make new friendships with more Interior Alaskans. This is a place where we would like to live at this point in our lives." MacMillan, his wife Deon, and daughter Taryn reside in Fairbanks.
Athletic Director Kelly Higgins says, "I am excited that we could offer the position to a very talented individual that is both a UAF graduate and a Fairbanks resident. Tavis brings a total package of skills to the university that will assist us in taking the ice hockey program to the next level."
