The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Athletics announces today the signing of another student athlete to a National Letter of Intent. Defenseman Daniel Carriere (St. Malo, Manitoba) will join the Nanook hockey team for the 1998-99 season.
Carriere is a 6-1, 185 lb. defenseman who played for the Nipawin Hawks in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. He scored 6 goals and 19 assists last season in his first year of junior hockey. Carrier also scored 4 goals and 3 assists in the SJHL playoff finals. "Daniel is a poised performer who makes smart decisions on the ice," says UAF Assistant Coach Tavis MacMillan. "He is sound defensively and carries the puck well. He also has solid offensive skills." Carrier was a member of Nipawin's top power play unit, which was ranked #1 in the entire SJHL this past season. "The fact that he was on the top power play unit in the SJHL, as a first year player (18 years old), tells you something about his ability right there," added MacMillan. "That alone says something about his talent."
The addition of Carriere closes out this year's UAF recruiting campaign. Six student athletes have been added to the 1998-99 hockey roster. Previously announced were forwards Bobby Andrews (Birtle, Manitoba) and Dennis Gould (Anchorage, AK), defensemen Aaron Grosul (Edmonton, Alberta) and Joe Borro (Marquette, MI), and goaltender Nathan Wheeler (Anchorage, AK).
