Fairbanks - Defenseman Scott Farrell (St. Albert, Alberta) turned away offers from several big name Division I teams and accepted a scholarship from UAF for the 1999-2000 season.
The 6-2, 205 lb. Farrell was an all-star for the St. Albert Saints in the Alberta Junior Hockey League last season where he scored 31 points (five goals and 26 assists). He was also named to the AJHL "All Rookie Team". Farrell played for the St. Albert Midget "AAA" Raiders during the 1997-98 season and was named the Alberta Midget "AAA" Hockey League's "Top Defenseman". The AMHL is considered as the best Midget league in Canada. Farrell played for the Raiders during the 1996-97 season as well, and was voted "Top Rookie" and "Top Defenseman" by the team.
"We're thrilled that Scott has decided to join the Nanooks," said UAF assistant coach Tavis MacMillan. "He is a skilled defenseman who reads the ice very well. He is also a good passer, who can be very physical. Scott was getting attention from many 'Big Name' schools for the following year, but decided he wanted to come to UAF after Coach Gadowsky visited his home recently."
"Scott has good size and will play a very aggressive game," said Gadowsky, after visiting with Farrell. "He has a great attitude for improving his strength and skills as a hockey player. I expect Scott to add a great deal of attitude and aggressive play to our defense. He is a great find for us."
Farrell joins forwards Colen Pappas (Balzac, Alberta), Casey Bartzen (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), Efren Larranaga (Fairbanks, AK) and goaltender Lance Mayes (Brentwood Bay, British Columbia) as rookies on the 1999-2000 Nanook Hockey Team.
The Nanooks may sign one more forward in the next few weeks.
