Fairbanks - The University of Alaska Fairbanks Hockey Team announced today that the NHL's Edmonton Oilers have invited former Nanook goaltender Ian Perkins to their main training camp September 3-12 in Edmonton, Alberta. Perkins, who completed his senior season with the Nanooks last spring, will get the opportunity to compete for a spot in the Edmonton organization.
The 6-4, 221 lb. Perkins was the mainstay in the UAF net last season with a 9-15-1 record (3.67 gaa, .894 sv. %). He was also the team MVP and currently holds the UAF record for career saves with 2,152. Perkins was named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's Defensive Player of the Week last season on two occasions (Oct. 19 & Nov. 9). His career record is 26-46-1.
"This is a great opportunity for Ian," says UAF assistant coach Tavis MacMillan. "Ian works very hard and is a fierce competitor. He has never been more committed to excel in hockey as he is now. I am thrilled for him." Former Nanook head coach Dave Laurion adds, "There is not a more deserving goaltender than Ian to get a shot at the NHL. He has worked hard over his four-year UAF career for this opportunity. He is a big kid and the NHL loves size. I know he will have success because he is the type of person who makes his own breaks."
This is a homecoming of sorts for Perkins who grew up near Edmonton in Wainwright, Alberta. He also played his minor and junior hockey near Edmonton in Sherwood Park, Alberta, and Olds, Alberta, respectively.
