Fairbanks - The Nanooks have signed another gem! The University of Alaska Fairbanks hockey program announced today that center Blaine Bablitz (Valleyview, AB) accepted a scholarship offer from UAF for the 1999-2000 season.
The 5-10, 180 lb. Bablitz was a standout performer for the Grande Prairie Storm in the Alberta Junior Hockey League last year. He was know around the AJHL for his tremendous offensive skills. As an 18 year old, Bablitz was the leading scorer for the Storm with 84 points in 62 games (25 goals/59 assists). He also played the 1997-1998 season with the Storm and was named to the AJHL "All Rookie Team".
"Blaine has great tools," said UAF assistant coach Tavis MacMillan. "He is very skilled and incredibly smart on the ice. His ability to read the lanes and see a play develop ahead of time is something you can't teach. Blaine, like Scott Farrell (recently signed by UAF), is a young player who received attention from many big name schools for the following year. He decided, however, that he wanted to come to school now and we are thrilled with his decision to come to UAF. He will be an exciting player to watch during his Nanook career."
Bablitz joins forwards Colen Pappas (Balzac, Alberta), Casey Bartzen (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), Efren Larranaga (Fairbanks, AK), defenseman Scott Farrell (St. Albert, AB) and goaltender Lance Mayes (Brentwood Bay, British Columbia) as rookies on the 1999-2000 Nanook Hockey Team.
