Fairbanks - Nanook Hockey fans are in for a real treat! Highlighting the 1999-2000 UAF schedule are CCHA home contests against league champion and NCAA Final Four participant Michigan State. Top 10-ranked Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Northern Michigan will also visit Fairbanks. The 34-game slate includes 28 league contests and six non-conference games. 16 contests are scheduled at the Carlson Center and two games will be played at the Big Dipper Arena.
In CCHA news, the league reduced its conference schedule from 30 to 28 games. Nanook fans will be happy to see the three-game home weekend format is history. Upon becoming a member of the CCHA, UAF's home schedule was dominated by three-game weekends. With the recent addition of Nebraska-Omaha into the CCHA, the more traditional four-game series format was adopted. League teams will not play every CCHA opponent four games, however, due to the size of the conference (11 teams) and the new 28-game schedule.
Comprising the home part of the UAF schedule will be 14 CCHA dates with Ohio State (Friday, Saturday, October 8, 9), Michigan (Friday, Saturday, October 22, 23), Michigan State (Friday, Saturday, November 5, 6), Northern Michigan (Friday, Saturday, November 26, 27), Notre Dame (Friday, Saturday, January 28, 29), Ferris State (Friday, Saturday, February 11, 12) and league newcomer Nebraska-Omaha (Friday, Saturday, February 25, 26).
The Nanooks will also face a 14-game CCHA road schedule. Road contests include games with Bowling Green (October 29, 30), Notre Dame (November 12, 13), Nebraska-Omaha (December 3, 4), Western Michigan (January 7, 8), Lake Superior State (January 14,15), Miami (February 4, 5) and Michigan State (February 18, 19).
In non-conference action, UAF will square off with Alaska Anchorage for the annual Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup series. The UAA series is expanding to a four-game format with two games in Fairbanks (Friday and Saturday, October 15, 16) and two games in Anchorage (March 3, 4). Division I newcomer Wayne State (MI), who is a member of the newly-formed Division I conference College Hockey America, will travel to Fairbanks to play the Nanooks (Friday, Saturday, January 21, 22). Wayne State is coached by former Western Michigan mentor Bill Wilkinson.
"This is by far the best overall schedule that we have had," said UAF assistant coach Tavis MacMillan. "We are excited to play Friday and Saturday home games. It will be a much better situation for our team and fans. It is also exciting to play UAA four games again. Season ticket holders will really get a great value with our new home schedule."
