Brian Renfrew Joins UAF Hockey Staff

Fairbanks - University of Alaska Fairbanks Hockey Coach Guy Gadowsky announced today that former Lathrop High School and Western Michigan University standout Brian Renfrew is joining the Nanook Hockey team as a volunteer assistant coach.

From Fairbanks, Renfrew was a four-year letterwinner with the Western Michigan Broncos from 1991-1995. He owns the WMU record for most minutes played in a season (2356:21) and has 39 career wins. Renfrew also holds the third-best career goals against average record in Bronco history (3.71). WMU is a member of the CCHA.

After college, Renfrew played professionally for the Dayton Bombers in the East Coast Hockey League (1996-1997), the Anchorage Aces in the West Coast Hockey League (1997-1998) and the Alexandria Warthogs in the Western Professional Hockey League (1998-1999). Renfrew and UAF assistant coach Kirk Patton were members of the Alaska State High School Champion Lathrop Malemutes during the 1986-1987 season.

"It's great to have Brian join our staff," said Patton. "He will bring a wealth of goaltending knowledge to our team."

The Nanooks open the 1999-2000 season under new head coach Guy Gadowsky Friday and Saturday (Oct. 8-9) at the Big Dipper Ice Arena. Nanook fans will get to preview the 1999-2000 team this Friday night at the annual Blue vs. Gold game held at the UAF Patty Center. Cost of the game is $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for students and youth.
