Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce Candidate Forum ~ Initial Statement on 9/15/99 - School Board Campaign

I am Dr William Pfeifer, and I am running for school board. A major concern in the community is Ketchikan's economy. The quality of the school system plays a key role in developing that economy.

My goal is to make Ketchikan the best school district in the state. Wouldn't it be great to see the headlines in the year 2002 as, " All Ketchikan students receive diplomas, with no drop- outs?"

I tell my children at home, that 'can't' doesn't live here and I believe that 'can't' doesn't live in Ketchikan.

We can be the best in the State and we do that by taking advantage of our educational assets, which are:

  • Great children eager to learn
  • Professional & dedicated staff
  • Families & community members actively involved

    • AND ----We can do that by:

  • Ensuring that all of Ketchikan's children are prepared to pass the Alaska State Competency exam and graduate with the academic skills needed to succeed in adult life;
  • Having a clear and concise plan of identification, prevention and intervention;
  • Ensuring that we have one of the lowest drop-out rates in the State and not one of the highest;
  • Establishing and maintaining safe and drug free schools;
  • Providing educational opportunities that appropriately challenge all children including Ketchikan's brightest;
  • And by providing a diverse program and class selection at the high school and furthering alliances with the UAS Ketchikan campus and the business community.

    • I believe that community members in every walk of life in Ketchikan desire that every child succeeds. By working together we can ensure that every child in Ketchikan has the educational opportunities they need.

    Finally, I believe that all of our children should be able to read at grade level by the end of second grade.

    So, if you want someone to systematically work at making Ketchikan's Schools the best in the state, I ask that you vote for Dr William Pfeifer on October 5th.
