KGBSD Board Meeting 10/13/99

Information Requests of Superintendent John Thomas
By Dr Bill Pfeifer

In order for a new board member to carry out their duties and be prepared to inform the public the following information is being requested.

  • Request all SPED information and correspondence related to the sanction report including email and memos.
  • Request that all information that is confidential must be consistently stamped confidential and should not be left up to the employees or the board to try and determine what is confidential. Unless it is stamped it will be considered public.
  • Request all training information, instructions, and recommendations shared with the teachers, principals, administration, and the board by the DOE personnel, and contracted personnel, regarding SPED and the specific sanction corrections. (please indicate what was presented to each group.)
  • Request that the Superintendent schedule a teleconference for the board and the state commissioner of education, and his appropriate staff, for the purpose of bringing us up to speed on the SPED sanctions, and to answer questions to clarify definitions, criteria and other issues and procedures.
  • Request that the superintendent obtain copies of the state booklet on reading and make them available for review.
  • Request that the superintendent send a letter to the state board to insist on the continued reporting of drop out rates in the district report cards. This is vital given the high stakes competency exam coming up. A clear definition of what classifies as a drop out and the appropriate mechanism of collecting that data should also be specified in the regulation and be sent to all districts.
  • Request a copy of the most current district report card (with all its components) that is mandated by the state.
  • Request a list of all employees with their current position, current pay, and total benefits. Also include a copy of the pay scale with steps and where each employee is on that scale.
  • Request a copy of the current contracts.
  • Request that information be also provided in electronic format.
  • Request a copy of the most recent testing results. This is to include the raw data from the testing companies and all their reports, not just the district summary.
  • Request a copy of the current reading plan as adopted.
  • Request what aspects of the plan have been implemented.
  • Request who authorized the use of the new 7th grade math book to be also used in pre-algebra and supplant the current pre-algebra book.
  • Request what active action has been taken in the last two months to find a reading specialist, or to contract with one.
  • Request a written explanation of the SB 36 monies as described by the superintendent in a closed door meeting with school board candidates.
  • Request a copy of all Indian Ed correspondence, including email, with the team from Washington D.C., and a copy of their written report.
  • Request that all public information be freely and immediately available to the public. Late information brought to the board at meetings should be added to the packets available in the public library. A comprehensive web site should be considered.
  • Request a complete list of all current district committees, the chair and members of each committee, the specific purpose and direction of the committee, and applicable deadlines or termination dates of the committees.
  • Request the current procedure to add items to the agenda and structuring of the agenda.
  • Request the policy and guidelines on piloting texts and materials, along with a report of any piloting currently authorized and in progress.
