Representatives from NOAA and RIDOLFI visited Metlakatla in September 2001 for reconnaissance of the beaches and other possible sampling areas.  They interviewed Community members about where they collect seafood and what kinds of fish and shellfish they eat.  From this information, NOAA began drafting the sampling plan.

As NOAA developed the Study Plan, the Study Team selected eight species of seafood for sampling and analysis.  The Team had to prioritize and focus the selection, since funding for the study was limited.
