|Preparing a chiton (slipper) sample for shipping to the laboratory.|
Once the samples were collected, they had to be prepared. For example, here are gumboot chitons or "slippers" (a local name, not to be confused with other species designated elsewhere as "slippers") being cleaned and prepared for shipping to the lab. Slippers are very large chitons, but most of the animal is inedible. The yellow part along the belly is eaten by some Metlakatla residents.
