Karen's Bio

Karen Parr came to Alaska in 1961. She taught at Main and North Pole Junior Highs and Hunter and Salcha Elementary Schools, and for two years taught math on television.

In 1975 she was elected to the Borough Assembly by a write-in vote, and served a three-year term, one as presiding officer. During these years, she and her husband Charlie opened Alaska House and Xanadu, and Karen managed the business, spending four sessions in Juneau while Charlie was in the legislature. Karen introduced computer use to classroom teachers throughout Alaska, especially villages and small towns. In 1984 she became FNSB School District's first computer coordinator. Karen retired from the District in 1987.

In 1984, Karen first ran for state house and, in April 1995, was chosen by the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly to replace Nanci Jones. That fall and again in 1998 she was elected to the Assembly. She served one term as Presiding Officer on the Assembly. Term limits prevented her running when her second term ended in 2001.

Karen has served as president of the Alaska Municipal League, and member of the Alaska Teaching Practices Commission and the Redistricting Board of 1989-90. She was chairman of the first advisory committee for the Tanana Valley Community College, senior warden of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, and member of the Episcopal Dioceses of Alaska Standing Committee.

Karen has three grown children in Alaska and nine grandchildren.
