Water Definitions

Artesian

An artesian is a well with a man-made bore hole. The water flows out of the top under the natural head pressure of the aquifer.

Chlorine

A gas, widely used in the disinfection of water and an oxidizing agent for organic matter, iron, etc.

Disinfection

A process in which pathogenic (disease producing) bacteria are killed.

Dissolved solids

The weight of matter in true solution in a stated volume of water; includes both inorganic and organic matter.

Distillation

The process in which a liquid, such as water is converted into steam by heating, and the steam cooled and condensed to the liquid state.

E. Coli

Escherichiaa coli, one of the members of the coliform group of bacteria indicating fecal contamination.

Hard water

Water with a total hardness of one grain per gallon or more, as calcium carbonate equivalent.

Micron

a linear measure equal to one millionth of a meter, or .00003937 inches.

Ozone

Ozone has been used in water treatment since 1903. Like Chlorine, ozone is an oxidizer which kills bacteria by destroying the protective lining of their cells. Ozone is three parts oxygen, it leaves no residual or byproducts in the water. When ozone is injected into the water you are only injecting a form of oxygen. Because it is only a triatomic form of oxygen it is not stable enough to be stored or transported. After a few hours it returns to the monatomic form and dissipates.

Osmosis

A process of diffusion of a solvent such as water through a semipermeable membrane which will transmit the solvent but impede most dissolved substances.

Reverse osmosis (RO)

A process of water treatment. RO is a process that reverses the flow of water in a natural process of osmosis so that the water passes from the more concentrated to the more dilute solution through a semipermeable membrane.

Soft Water

Any water which contains less that one pgp of hardness minerals, expressed as calcium carbonate.

Spring

A well with a natural path to the surface. The natural head pressure of the aquifer forces the water to the surface.

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

The weight of solids per unit volume of water.

Total Hardness

A measure of the hard scale-forming compounds, the majority of which calcium and magnesium.

Turbidity

A measurement of the light scattering properties of water.

Ultraviolet Water Treatment

A process of water treatment using ultraviolet light rays

Water Softening

The removal of calcium and magnesium from water.
