Mythos Expeditions Kodiak

--Bears--

Grizzly, Kodiak, or Brown

No matter what name you choose to call them by, we know our bears, where they are and how to get you to them.
Whether you wish to paddle a kayak and see/photograph the bears in their most natural environment, where you and the bears are nearly on an equal footing, or from the security of the deck of the Mythos, we can put you there.
The Alaska Department of Natural Resources says of the Katmai Coast, "It has the highest concentration of brown bears in the world."

Opportunists all, the bears of the Katmai coast can be found eagerly digging clams, lapping the juice of freshly crushed barnacles, crunching sedges, or peeling the skin off a chum salmon, depending on seasonal abundance. There are new inights into these great bears for everyday you spend at the coast.

Guests fly to the Mythos aboard float planes from Kodiak, or travel over with us on the boat. Once there, we may travel along the Katmai coast aboard the Mythos to change venues as the weather or viewing opportunities change.
Nights are spent in safe anchorages aboard the Mythos, while the days are spent slowly cruising the coast or exploring the wilderness from our kayaks.
The Katmai coast is no theme park exhibit, but real wilderness with all its serendipitous opportunities. Moose, fox, wolverine are present, as well as seals, sea lions, and a variety of whales.

There are so many bears along this coast; sows with cubs, siblings still together, young on their own for the first time, lone boars, lone sows. Sometimes we can see all of these on a single stretch of beach. Kayaking along the shores can be intense with bears.

The wild coast of Alaska sets its own pace.

Not all our time is spent in the kayaks or running the coastline in search of bears or other wildlife. Everyday it's good to quiet down and just observe the country around us. Guests like to go off exploring in kayaks in protected bays on their own, beachcombing for curiosities, picking berries, or even taking a power nap in the middle of the day.
Rushing through a day at a frenetic pace is the assured defeat of a vacation...which is by definition "the state of being vacant" forgetting the schedule of what must get done. The wild coast of Alaska sets its own pace, neither slow nor fast, but in keeping with the cycles of nature.

Stan and Karen spotting bears. Because they were in the high alpine, they called them Swiss bears, and there were an incredible number...almost everywhere they looked. It turned to a contest, naming the bears as they spotted them.
