Travel, Lodging, Preparation, Prices, and Other Considerations

Travel..."How do we get there?"

You can fly to Kodiak in one long day from any major city in North America. Flights to Kodiak come out of Anchorage via Alaska Airlines aboard a Boeing 737 in about fifty minutes or on ERA Aviation aboard a DeHaviland Dash 8 in about seventy-five minutes.

You can also "drive" to Kodiak from Homer or Seward aboard the Alaska State Ferry, Tustemena. Try their websites for more information.

Lodging..."Where do we stay?"

While chartering the Mythos, of course, you will stay aboard. But it always wise when traveling in coastal Alaska to plan extra days for weather delays. While staying in Kodiak, you can book lodging in any one of four hotels, or numerous bed and breakfasts.

Preparation..."What do we bring?"

"I know I packed it somewhere!"

The best advice is, "Don't bring too much." Pack as though you were going camping. Probably the most often heard comment when guests are preparing to leave is, "I brought so much stuff!" Soft luggage or duffle bags (called sea bags on boats) or packs are most forgiving on boats.

Hard shell luggage should be left ashore.

There is little storage in the cabins, so that extra gear will have to go in the hold. We have all the fishing gear (except for you flyfishers), all the kayak gear. Bring cameras, lots of film, binoculars, video camera, etc.

Clothes, footwear, raingear, etc.

Dress for weather in the fifties, Fahrenheit. It may be warmer, but on boats, the proximity of wind and water makes dressing warmly a must. Bulky sweaters, windbreaker jackets, long sleeve shirts, and long pants won't be overdressing on the coast, even in summer. Many people like wearing long johns (ncluding the skipper). The modern array of fleece products is wonderful. Better to be warm than miserable. Sun (and potentially rain) make hats with brims a necessary item. Sun glasses, especially the polarized variety, let you see much more clearly into the water for a better view of fish, whales, seal, and dolphins. A camp or deck slipper with a waterproof sole makes lounging on the boat so much more comfortable. Fat socks, close fitting waterproof boots, or kayak mukluks, are great for getting ashore, raingear for those nasty days, thin Polartec gloves for fishing or paddling. We'll bring the deck chairs.

What experience do we need?

Let us know about your experience level so we can better provide the appropriate training and guidance. I was asked recently about the level of guidance we can provide. You can be as independent as you wish. But we always are there to provide assistance and accompaniment per your comfort level.

Beginner kayakers are welcome, most of our kayakers are new to the method of transport and enjoy their experience greatly. We have both single and double kayaks. Our kayaks are stable and reliable, and we are always available to go along with you.

Our emphasis is to evaluate where you are and to take you to a new level of comfort, knowledge, and understanding or our unique maritime environment, along with the fishing, kayaking, wild life viewing, photography, or whatever. That's our job.
