Admiralty Island has the highest concentration of brown bears in the world. Six salmon streams empty into Funter Bay, and when the salmon are running, bears are feeding. From the deck of our boat or from the comfort of the dining room, it has been possible to watch these spectacular animals as they go about their lives. In the evening twilight during the salmon spawn, it is not unusual to see a brown bear sow and her cubs chase spawning salmon in the stream that runs across the nearby tide flats.
