Philosophy
Play N Learn believes children learn best through their senses and "by doing." PNL staff are responsible for establishing and maintaining safe environments, with activities and schedules which allow children maximum opportunities for exploration, independence, cooperation and active participation. Individual attention, good nutrition and healthy habits are included as part of our daily routine. We initiate and expect direct and regular communication between parents and staff. We believe in providing developmentally appropriate activities and offering nurturing care for young children. Each group's routine includes a variety of activites with particular emphasis on the skills and interests of that stage of development. Parents and volunteers are always welcome in our classes. Foster Grandparents work daily in each program, when available. Play N Learn enjoys the diversity of cultures in our community. Children, parents, staff, families and friends are encouraged to share traditions and family culture through a variety of languages, stories, books, dance, music, food, games, artifacts, art, field trips etc. New ideas are welcomed. Our programs are part of our larger community and we participate in community events such as "Golden Days" and "clean-up day" to provide an example and opportunity for children to learn about good citizenship. PNL recognizes a responsibility to advocate for the needs and rights of families and encourages parents to become actively involved in supporting issues important to them.
Curriculum The Play N Learn curriculum allows children, within safe limits, to chose who they want to play with, what they want to play, where they want to do it, and for what length of time. Each child learns and explores at their own rate. Curriculum is emergent based on children's interests and understandings. Staff who work directly with the children do the planning. Curriculum is developmental with active involvement and hands-on activities offered. The class schedule and classroom environment supports the curriculum goals.
