The Tanana-Yukon Historical Society (TYHS) is a non-profit society administered by a 10-member board elected annually by the general membership. The organization has its headquarters in Fairbonks.

Mission Statement

TYHS is a member of the Alaska Historic Preservation Association, the Alaska Historical Society and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Its primary interests are the preservation and dissemination of the history of the Fairbanks area and to support other regions of the interior not represented by its own historical society in llke endeavors. The board is dedicated to educate the public on the priceless heritage of Alaska's past through public lectures and forums, publications in its many formats, through the administration of house museums and interpretive centers, and through the advocacy of historic preservation issues.

In furtherance of this commitment, the Board of TYHS will advise, assist, encourage, and cooperate with the Fairbanks Historical Commission and other various national, state, city and borough, and other public and private institutions, organizations. governmental units and repositories involved in one or more aspects within the interest sphere of TYHS.

General Goals of TYHS

The Tanana-Yukon Historical Society Board will:
  1. Develop an effective Management and Planning Process in order to enhance its ability to promote and preserve the history of the Faihanks area.
  2. Support efforts in the preservation of the built environment of the Fairbanks region.
  3. Support efforts to preserve the historic landscape of the Faibanks region.
  4. Support and encourage interpretive centers, local history museums, and Alaska history in the public school system.
  5. Encourage and support the writing and publication of local history.
  6. Encourage colaboration of efforts among local and state institutions and the sharing of information of federal, state, and local historic resources.

Objectives

  1. Seek to develop a plan to strengthen the ability of the board to gather input of the input of the membership in carrying out the miasion of TYHS. To be completed in 1996.

  2. Assist the Fairbanks Historical Commission in creating a plan for meeting Fairbanks historic preservation needs. Ongoing.

  3. Create an awards program to recognize outstanding individual or businesses in the field of history and historic preservation. Annual Award - starting in 1996.

  4. Seek new avenues in raising funds to support endeavors of TYHS through foundations, licensing agreements, and other innovative fundraising methods. Aggressively seek private, commercial and corporate partnerships. Starting in 1996.

  5. Seek and help organizations get funds to preserve Alaska's heritage and make it available to the public in its many forms. Forge Ad-Hoc Committees with other non-profit groups in furthering the Society goals.

  6. Encourage cooperative efforts between government and institutions, businesses and individuals in their efforts to preserve and interpret Alaska's history.

  7. Assist institutions, organizations and individuals in their endeavor to preserve Alaska's history in its many guises.

  8. Work to increase attention and awareness of the general public to the benefits of preserving Alaska's and specifically the history of the Fairbanks area, whether through interpretation and publication of primary-source materials and works of contemporary historians, the curtian of objects, oral history or the preservation of its historic stuctures and sites.

  10. Increase membership of TYHS through advocacy of preservation issues and membership entitlements.

  11. Promote history-related commemorations and projects by federal, state, and local agencies including those held on military installations.

  12. Promote community revitalization through targeted activities, educational programs, and workshops on on historic preservation.

Action Agenda for 1996

  1. Develop "Plan" for TYHS. Prepare procedural manual for Society.

  2. Hold general membership meeting.

  3. Initiate awards program and develop criteria for:
    1. Cultural Heritage Award
    2. Heritage Tourism Award
    3. Sustaining Contribution to the Society.
    4. Preservation Award for best efforts by an individual
    5. by an organization or business
    6. by local or state government in the FNSB

  4. Develop criteria and issue a list of 7 most dangered properties in the FNSB. Single structures, street blocks or whole neighoorhoods, archaeological sites may qualify.

  5. Develop media opportunities through program development and better communication, i.e. TV and radio interviews, listing in the Fairbanks phone book, advertise and promote annual meeting and awards programs, Most Endangered list.

  6. Establish standing and ad-hoc committees to further interestes of Society. Suggested committees inlude standing, Membership, Ways & Means, Events, Media Opportunity, and Legislative Committees.

  7. Start developing marketing strategies to carry Society into the new century.

  8. Develop better communication through an expanded news letter. Find ways to make newletter pay for itself i.e. Through listing of historic properties for sale and through other advertising revenues from ad space sold to selected buinesses. Develop newsletter/advertising budget.

  9. Celebrate Historic Preservation Week, May 12-17,1996 with a historic house tour, initiate a tour of Ladd Field Landmark on Fort Wainwright for the public.

  10. Start planning process for a series of Gold Rush projects and commemorations.
