The purpose of this observance is to raise awareness of the dangers to which children may be exposed on the Internet and ways in which they can be protected from them. Online safety is everyone's responsibility. Parents need to be vigilant about their children's use of the computer and cell phone. Teachers need to promote responsible Internet usage by students. Internet safety organizations need to help youth develop the decision-making skills needed to use the Web safely. Only through such coordinated efforts can we maximize the benefits of the Internet, while minimizing its dangers. The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) supports a number of programs and activities designed to raise awareness about the importance of online safety and to help protect children and youth from online exploitation and victimization. Resources: To obtain further information about OJJDP supported initiatives to promote Internet safety, visit: Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Program -- http://ojjdp.ncjrs.gov/programs/ProgSummary.asp?pi=3 Project Safe Childhood National Public Awareness Campaign -- http://www.projectsafechildhood.gov/ NetSmartz -- http://www.netsmartzkids.org/indexFL.htm Enough Is Enough -- http://www.enough.org/ i-SAFE -- http://www.isafe.org/ WebWiseKids -- http://www.webwisekids.org/ IKeepSafe Internet Safety Coalition -- http://www.ikeepsafe.org/ Note from the DRE: Parents, did you know that several registered sex offenders in Juneau admitted they use Facebook and MySpace to help them select potential victims? As great as these networking resources are, they eliminate a lot of the legwork and time spent by sexual predators in finding new victims. Make sure your child knows that anything published online is public information. Are they giving out too much personal information – address, times when they are alone in the home, public places where they can be found? In the past year I checked out several MySpace and Facebook profiles of local youth and the information and photos posted are concerning. As a parent, you have the right to check out your child’s profiles.
