|There is a reason why people who visit Kodiak Island can't wait to return. It's a special
place. For sportsmen -- especially halibut and salmon fishermen -- it's a dream come true.
||Fish and Explore Kodiak,
ALASKA'S ISLAND PARADISE
In the summer Kodiak Island is one of the world's most beautiful sights. Turning emerald green against the rich
blue of the northern Pacific, its flora and fauna explode with vigor hard to describe.
Plankton blooms turn the sea into thick, green soup. Game fish, birds and marine mammals converge to gorge themselves.
Bait fish resemble rain as they push tiny red crustaceans on the surface.
Humpback whales, summer migrants, show off in their gregarious style - leaping into the air (pictured). Sooty shearwaters
(pictured) return from offshore to feed in jubilant hordes reminiscent of Hitchcock's "the Birds."
Popular sea otters and comical puffins are easy targets for the camera. Seals and sea lions are everyday sights.
Kodiak Island Charters has catered to tourists in Kodiak for two decades. The visitor industry is growing, but
not as quickly as other areas of Alaska.
Commercial fishing is the economic mainstay. It's been hard hit recently with poor prices and lower demand overseas.
