The
aurora borealis during the months of September to April, Fairbanks,
Alaska is one of the best places in the world to view the Aurora
Borealis known as the “Northern Lights” because of its northern
latitude, a lack of interference from city lights farther north,
Fairbanks has aurora viewing an average of 240 nights a year.
Visitors
come from all over the world just to view this unique phenomenon.
The lights range from simple arcs across the horizon to shimmering
spirals that change shapes in seconds, to vast drapes of colors
filling the sky. Colors range from yellow and greens to reds,
purples and blues.
Normally, the lights can be viewed for hours at a time because the
northern lights concentrate in a band roughly above the Arctic
Circle, a winter tour to the arctic can provide the best aurora
viewing around Fairbanks. Our winter tours are set up according to
the times aurora viewing is best.
Visitors can see the aurora in the pre-morning darkness while
heading north and than again after darkness falls on the way back to
Fairbanks. Several stops when the aurora is strong, will provide
perfect photo opportunities.
