Harvey
Flying Service is owned and operated by Steve and
Mary Ann Harvey. We operate one airplane - a
Grumman Widgeon with Steve as our pilot. We
operate for 9 months of the year, from mid-March
until mid- December.
Steve
Harvey has been involved in Alaskan
aviation all his life. While growing up he
watched his father and uncle fly Grumman Gooses
and Widgeons around the Kodiak Island area. When
his parents started the first "Harvey Flying
Service" in the late '50's Steve spent much
of his free time lending a hand in the operation.
Steve began to fly small planes when he was still
in high school and knew that once he graduated,
flying a seaplane commercially was to be his
livelihood. Upon graduation though, his parents
thought it would be handy to have an airplane
mechanic in the family. Off they sent Steve to
mechanic school in Kansas City, KS. Upon arriving
at mechanic school, Steve promptly marched across
the street to the local flight school and signed
up for instruction for his commercial pilot's
license instead! He returned to Alaska with his
license in hand in 1966 and spent the next 10
years flying a variety of airplanes for air
charter operations in Kodiak, the Kenai Peninsula
and Southeast Alaska. The opportunity to fly a
Grumman amphibian drew Steve back to Kodiak full
time in 1976.
Mary
Ann Harvey first came to Alaska during
the Summer of 1976. When she returned to Seattle
that Fall, she felt "that pull" drawing
her back to Alaska. She was able to return to
Alaska during the Summer of 1977 and has called
Kodiak her home ever since. Married to Steve
since 1981, she is part of many of the operations
involved with running an air taxi business.
