About The Tide Pool

The Tide Pool's creators are Matt Gallien and Sara Nichols.

Sara moved to Seldovia in 1990 with her schoolteacher family. After graduating from Susan B. English School in 1993, she went away to college in Missoula, Montana. It only took those three years, (1990-1993), for Seldovia to get in her blood. The smell of the ocean air, the unpredictable weather, and most of all, the people of the community, drew her back four and a half years later.

Matt has lived in Seldovia since 1984, working in the cannery when it was open, on various fishing boats, and for local contractors. His love for his three daughters, the outdoors, and the community in general have kept him in Seldovia for these past 20 years.

The Tide Pool is a conglomeration of two dreams. Matt has always wanted to own waterfront property in Seldovia, and Sara has known she would someday run her own business since her senior year of high school. Those desires, combined with the many requests by Seldovians for a family style restaurant open year-round, have been the main components in the creation of The Tide Pool.

Ground was broken for the building in September 1999.

Participation by the community of Seldovia has been instrumental in the project from the very beginning, and stayed strong throughout the entire development.

The doors finally opened at the end of August 2001 with a grand appreciation banquet for everyone who had pitched in with help.
