The Oilwind Autobaiting Longline System uses a magazine system for capturing hauled hooks while storing the groundline in either round or rectangular tubs. Hydraulically spinning brushes sweep the hooks clean, while waterflow washes away the old bait and debris from the groundline. When the next tub of groundline is reached, the hook magazine is detached, placed in its tub and racked. When the string of gear is completed, the tubs are carried to the autobait setter and the magazines attached. This setter is a paired unit allowing alternate port and starboard tubs to be set alternatively for an uninterrupted string of gear. Longline is set conventionally over the stern while the hook magazine feeds the hooks into the the bait slot and the the hooks click smartly overboard baited with a single bait. Fishermen select their favorite bait.
Oilwind's Autobaiter allows only the hooks, one at a time, to come in contact with the bait, and avoids entirely getting the groundline or gangions soiled with bait, so the fish are not confused where to find the baited hook. This system is clean and efficient. Unlike more complex and expensive autobaiting systems, the Oilwind Autobaiter is simple and effective. The entire system, built of stainless steel and durable plastic, without tubs and groundline, weighs in at just about 410 pounds. Operation can be accomplished by a crew of two, with boat controls at the hauler. Installation is not a massive undertaking, leaving he vessel able to switch to other fisheries easily.
