More About Jig Reels

The Johan Fridi has a rail full of Oilwind jigging machines.

In 1910, OILWIND began as Harald Joensen's blacksmith shop . During its first years, the company primarily serviced the Faeroese fishing fleet, but with clear vision and hard work, the Joensens made good progress developing and manufacturing equipment and machinery for the fishing industry.

In 1973, the company moved into its modern plant. This advanced and well planned facility, together with an effective organization, which continuously made use of new technology, ensured that OILWIND customers got first class products and services. OILWIND is now the major mechanical engineering company and hydraulic service company in the Faeroe Islands (located between Scotland and Iceland).

OILWIND's principal aim has always been to lead in the field of developing, manufacturing, and marketing of highly specialized segments of marine equipment and services.

OILWIND jigging machines work very well in the north Atlantic waters and most people are now ordering electrically powered machines in preference to hydraulic power...Phil Lockley, Fishing News International.

“There is a noticeable saving of fuel by shutting the engine(s) down when working in the correct area and also at times of year, the engine noise from any boat can (say most skippers) reduce the catch rate. The electrically driven Oilwind machines take very little current and a normal bank of batteries will cope very well without any major drain of power,” Joensen added.

OILWIND survives on innovation, and is internationally known for its quality products, marketed under the brand name OILWIND. A team of highly qualified engineers design and manufacture (in-house) a wide range of deck machinery, fish handling, and seafood processing equipment and systems to meet the demands of progressive vessel owners and shore based customers.

Most widely known for our experience in the field of hydraulics, most of OILWIND's products are hydraulically driven (hence the name OILWIND). As sales and service agents for most of the best known international hydraulic manufacturers, and in close cooperation with them, we are able to service nearly everything in the field of hydraulics. Capstans, windlasses, and anchor winches...cargo and mooring winches...cable winches, sea cranes...specialized trawl and auxiliary winches, are some of our products.

Our total commitment to the fishing industry is covered by the following areas:
Fishing Technology
Seafood Processing Equipment
Hydraulics
Afloat Ship Service

Eydna Mikkelsen, OILWIND technician, and grand daughter of the founder, Harald Joensen, is expert at building and repairing Oilwind's jigging machines.

Alaska Fishing Machines

In 1998, Alaska Fishing Machines was started by fisherman Dave Kubiak in order to provide OILWIND jigging machines to cod fishermen in Kodiak. Alaska. Why? Because they are the best and he wanted them on his boat. OILWIND products are innovative, reliable, and well made. Asked about starting a repair station on Kodiak for OILWIND products, Jakup Joensen replied, "You won't make money on that. They don't often need repair." Since then, Alaska Fishing Machines has sold jiggers to fishermen from Alaska, Canada, the East Coast, Bermuda, and Far East Russia. "With modern shipping and communications, ordering from Alaska is just as convenient as your phone."
