Visiting and Respite Services: Giving the Gift of Time
Brave Heart Volunteers are available to provide a range of services free of charge to those in need. However, our volunteers do not provide nursing services or perform heavy labor. We recommend families in need of nursing assistance view our Resource List to access either an agency or to hire a paid caregiver.
The types of assistance our Brave Heart Volunteers provide to help Sitka's seniors and elders to stay independent at home include:
- Companionship
- Conversation and Comfort
- Simple Yard Help
- Chores and Laundry
- Shopping and Errands
- Reading and Letter Writing
- Arts and Crafts
- Simple Meal Preparation
- Basic Home Maintenance
We strive to meet the needs of elders and families facing health challenges such as terminal or chronic illness, frailty, dementia, end-of-life care, disabilities or hospitalization. If you or your loved one need assistance not listed above, please contact us and we will do our best to find a solution that works for everyone.
Respite is essentially a gift of time for caregivers. Often, caregivers will put their own needs on hold to serve their loved ones, which can lead very quickly to burnout. Taking just an afternoon off once a week can make a profound difference by lowering stress and offering space to just BE without providing care. Brave Heart Volunteers recognize the many challenges that can arise for a family caregiver, and we are here to offer support.
